No, it’s not the title of my latest adventure book but marine scientists from Plymouth University.
They want to measure how gravel beaches stand up to extreme storms – and brother, did they have the right conditions recently! The Rapid Coastal Response Unit spent 24 hours monitoring the effects of the storm waves in Cornwall.
The average height of the waves at Porthleven peaked at 5.4m metres, with the biggest wave recorded at an incredible 10.2m (30 feet). A standard London Double Decker bus is 4.38m tall.
They also looked at the run-up of the waves on the beach – these reached 6 metres beyond the predicted tide line. You can see why it’s not a good idea to go too near an angry sea.
